"The mark of a really great writer is that he or she gives expression to what the masses of mankind think or feel without knowing it. The mediocre writer simply writes what everyone would have said."
-G.C. Lichtenberg

Why Do the Horses Run?

It was a September morning
When my baby woke me up
She said, Daddy we've got things to do
The sun is coming up
So I took her hand and we walked the field
Of my grandaddy's farm
Where the grass was long and the air was cool
And mist hid  the barn

And the horses ran through the field
Their manes and their tales flew
In a wave of joy they ran like the wind
As I remembered the days of my youth

And  she said

Why do the horses run, Dad?
Why do the horses run?
Have they got someplace to go?
Is there something that needs done?
Daddy, why do they run?

It was 25 years ago
My pappy bought the farm
I was just a boy of 10
And the world reached so far
On endless aftternoons I'd play
And run around the barn
Where an old oak tree stood firm and tall
I'd swing from a rope

But time wore me down
With work and things to do
In a wave of neglect I started my life
And forgot the days of my youth

And she said

Why do the horses run, Dad?
Why do the horses run?
Have they got someplace to go?
Is there something that needs done?
Daddy, why do they run?

As we pondered there she looked at me
She looked right through my soul
And I could see she knew about
The answer still untold
With a timid smile she turned away
And laughed as she went
My tired old body sprang to life
Around the farm we flew

My daughter ran through the field
Her mane of hair flying
In a wave of joy we ran like the wind
As she brought me back to the truth

And she said

Why do the horses run, Dad?
Why do the horses run?
Have they got someplace to go?
Is there something that needs done?
Daddy, why do they run?

Why do the horses run, Dad?
Why do the horses run?
Have they got someplace to go?
Is there something that needs done?
Daddy, why do they run?
